What’s the difference between popping and locking?
"Well I've heard of pop'n'lock, so aren't they the same thing?"
If this is you, you're not alone. Popping and Locking often get confused for each other, mixed up or forgotten entirely, so we're here to clear the air...
Popping and Locking are both from the West Coast of the USA, they are both considered "funk styles" and they both came to popularity in the 1970s.
And both are freestyle dance forms.
So how do they differ?
Much of what you'd recognize as "the robot" is Popping. Popping also includes popular elements like tutting, animation, gliding (think the moonwalk) and many more.
Locking is very specific in its movement vocabulary, including points, "giving yourself five" and the famous lock.
